1. Line graph (Line graph)

Line graph is a chart that contains one or several lines, each line represents the change of a certain element over a certain period of time (week, month, year, ...) .

Line charts usually have 2 axes: horizontal and vertical (horizontal and vertical). In particular, the horizontal axis often shows different timelines and the royal axis shows data about the object such as percentage, amount, population, etc. When taking the Line Gaph test, candidates need to be able to see and describe it. subject change over time.

2. Bar chart

Bar chart is a chart that contains one or several columns, each column represents the change of a certain element over a certain period of time (week, month, year, ...) . Similar to a Line Graph, a Bar chart also uses columns (horizontal or vertical) to compare items with each other. Column charts usually have 2 axes: 1 vertical axis (usually showing values) and 1 horizontal axis (usually showing objects).

3. Pie chart

Pie chart is a chart shown in the form of a circle and divided into parts so that it is proportional to the total quantity. This type of chart is often used to compare objects at a population level. Depending on the problem, the number of objects can range from 2 to 6, each part of the pie chart will show the data (usually as a percentage) for a certain object, the object names with Their colors or symbols are usually listed next to them.

4. Table of data (Table)

Table is a table that displays data in columns and rows. Depending on the post, the number of columns and rows will vary. Each column and each row represents the data of a specific object. Table is considered as a "variant" of Bar chart because both types are similar in comparison structure and data representation.

Tables are often presented as numbers so it won't be as visually obvious as graphs, pie charts, etc. this can make it difficult to spot data for immediate comparison.

Ví dụ: The table shows questionnaires about the opinions of club members and general public for the new theatre in one town in 2012.

5. Multiple charts

Mixed charts include 2 tables showing 2 different information, these 2 tables can be of the same or different types and candidates need to compare the data, comment on the similarities. and different to finally draw a conclusion about the correlation between the two tables.

The graphs below show the cinema attendants in Australia and the average cinema visits by different age groups from 1996 to 2000.

6. Process diagram (Process)

Process is aform chart in IELTS Writing Ask the candidate to describe a process or process according to a given diagram or figure. Process is illustrated step by step so candidates can easily write in sequence the steps in the picture. There are two main types of Process: natural process and manufactoring process (man-made process).

7. Map (Map)

Map (Map) is a type of question that requires the test taker to describe the changes and developments over a certain period of time in an area or place (school, city, town, …). The Map form is often rated as more difficult than the other forms because most candidates are not familiar with this form, so they cannot analyze it carefully and accurately. Map is also divided into two sub-forms, one-map and multi-map.

The maps show how the industrial area will change into a housing area in the future.

In general, for IELTS Writing Task 1, candidates should use academic language without personal pronouns. The language will vary slightly depending on whether the question type is a pie chart, or map, or table.... For example, in describing a line graph, candidates will use a lot of verbs and nouns “increasing” and “decreasing”, but in the process diagram, candidates need to focus more on the passive voice.
